Paint with Me! – Branched Fern
Hey, friends, in this video post we are painting a fern. This is a simple painting and really fun and relaxing. I enjoy painting ferns! You will too! I hope you give it a try. Lets first go over the list of supplies you will need.
Supply list
Watercolor Paper. (I’m using paper from Bee Watercolor Paper Company)
Watercolor paint. I’m using Grumbacher watercolors (sold in tubes).
Jar of water
Paper towel
Pointed Round paint brush in size six.
Grumbacher colors
Sap Green
Burnt Umber
First step is, using some sap green, I painted the stem. One big stroke moving my whole arm down the page. Try to only use the tip of your brush for this step otherwise your stem maybe to thick.
Next paint the leaves at the top. I painted one leaf at top of the stem with two beside it. Then I started the branches on each side. The branches each have a leaf at the top with more going down the branch directly across from each other.
Keep going down the stem first painting the branches and then the leaves on the branches. Make the branches longer and leaves bigger each time. When you are painting each leaf start with the tip of your brush, push down letting all the bristles spread, then lift up back to the point of the brush to finish each leaf. Refer to video below.
You can first mark the leaf and paint the branch from its top leaf to the main stem. This helps you mark how long the branch will be. (photo Below)
If you accidently paint a branch too long, just cover the top of it with a leaf! Easy peasy. I think it looks nice with some leaves dark and some leaves light. So don’t forget to go over some of the leaves and darken them.
To finish the fern, add some burnt umber brown to the branch stems do this spareingly only to certain branches not all. Don’t forget to elongate the stem of the fern using the burnt umber. That’s it! Sophisticated and elegant, fern. Would look nice framed by itself next to other leaf paintings or abstract watercolor art. Happy painting, friends!
