Paint With Me! – Pinecone

Hey friends, in this video post we are painting a pinecone. Pinecones are a favorite of mine. I really enjoy painting them. Pinecone paintings make great holiday card designs, gift tags, or holiday table place cards. Have fun following along and painting pinecones for your holiday or winter decor. Let’s go over the supplies you will need:

Supply list

Watercolor Paper. (I’m using paper from Bee Watercolor Paper Company)

Watercolor paint. I’m using Grumbacher watercolors (sold in tubes).

Jar of water

Paper towel

Pointed Round paintbrush in size six.

Grumbacher colors

Burnt Umber

Hookers Green Dark

Raw umber

Step one we begin the pinecone with three points at the top. I like to think of the sections of the pinecone like petals that are open at the top and sit closer together at the bottom. Keep that in mind as you are painting the sections of the pine cone. Leaving white space between some of the “petals” is important. Three points at the top, crescents in the middle, and close rectangle shapes and lines at the bottom. The shapes at the sides of your pinecone should tilt up and be cup-like.

Next, layer in some darker brown using less water and the Burnt Umber. If you mess up or need to lighten an area use the paper towel to blot. (refer to the video below)

Layering dark colors on top

Now, for the pine needle branch use just the tip of your brush to make thin lines in one or two strokes. You may want to mark the stem and make the needles coming out of the stem. I began by making my strokes at the tip of the needle and moving inward toward the middle of the branch, putting in some needles behind the pinecone and then painting the branch last with Raw Umber. (Refer to the video below) It is very important that your needles have light and dark areas. Use more water to lighten the Hookers green and less water for painting the darker needles. Remember for the needles use only the tip of your brush!

And lastly, it is always fun to do some splattering. Use any of the colors in the painting. I used Raw Umber.

So friends, start making your holiday cards and gift tags or paint something nice for your mantle in the winter. Whatever you decide this little pinecone friend is one to keep painting over and over again. I hope you give it a try. Happy Painting! – Haley
