How to Fix Scratch in Wood Floor
I love hard wood floors. They appeal to me because I love natural elements in home decor, they are shiny and clean, and just beautiful.
Todd and I have a hard wood floor in our living room. We refinished it ourselves. You can Read about here: Wood Floor Before & After. There are down sides of having hard wood flooring. Especially if it made out of real wood. It scratches. Depending on the wood this can happen very easily. A lot of old homes in the olden days used pine. Which is one of the softest woods out there. Ours we have determined must be pine. It scratches so easily.
We have coasters and pads under all our furniture legs, but sometimes a really heavy piece scooted at the wrong angle, or toy truck, will leave a mark inevitably. Luckily, we saved the can of stain so we remember what color to use to fix these blemishes. Just recently we discovered a scratch, so I wanted to share how we go about making it look beautiful again.
You will need
- Wood stain that matches your floor
- Sandpaper
- Dampcloth
- Rags
- Rubber gloves
First, make sure your floor is clean. Then sand the scratch to smooth the surface again and get rid of polyurethane. Next, wipe clean removing saw dust. Finally, dip rag in stain and rub onto wood. Have an extra rag to wipe excess stain from the wood. You may have to go back and rub more stain on. If it’s really not looking right, you may need to do a little more sanding. So just repeat all the steps and you should have a beautiful floor again.
After it dries, I paint polyurethane on for extra protection and beautiful shine. That’s the other downside to wood flooring, to keep that shine, it needs to be re-sealed (with polyurethane) every few years.
Here is a video showing the process.
