Container Gardening
We have been outside enjoying the beautiful summer weather! It actually got pretty hot in the 90’s! Now it is cooled down again to temps we are more used too 🙂 In the heat I was putting together my new container garden. I have shrunk my garden in half. Over the now unused section, Todd scattered grass seed and we are just letting it come up as it will along with all the weeds. I mow it now like the rest of the lawn, and it is strange not seeing it as part of my vegetable garden.
Here are my little helpers 🙂 We got some containers ready. Filling them with layers. First with stone to make them heavy and hold water yet allowing it to pass through holes in the bottom of each container. Then sand. This also helps with drainage and is cheaper than filling with potting soil. Lastly, potting soil. I did not mix any compost, but that is a good thing to do. All plants love compost. I may use some liquid fertilizers instead this year.
Well it is looking good. Also, we had fun turning an old wheelbarrow into a container for planting. Todd drilled holes in it for me. The kids and I buried it in the ground and spread mulch around it. The containers will all sit on a mulched section around the wheelbarrow. My herb garden is next to this.
Beyond the herb garden is my strawberry patch. It is doing AMazing! Mulching has really help me with weed control. It’s still a war, but this year I’m winning. 🙂 Last year the few strawberries we did get the kids ate them all before I could even get them in the house! This year we have a bumper crop and there is plenty to share. Our favorite way to eat them is strawberry shortcake.
Well, I better put my strawberry shortcake down and get to the greenhouse. I’m running behind this year, but that’s ok. I totally re-arranged the shape of the garden. I can’t wait till it all comes together.

We just picked some more tonight. I will be baking some biscuits, tomorrow I hope, for strawberry shortcake. Sweet biscuits this time instead of cake. And of lots of whipped cream always! 🙂
